Music for Performance
Introduction & Scherzo for Cello
1954
Program Notes
At the time of Franz Waxman’s death, at the ago of 60 on February 27, 1967, he was working simultaneously on two Works – Dr. Jekyll – a commission from the New York City Opera (unfortunately only the sketches for Act 1 survive) and a cello concerto for Pierre Fournier. The Introduction and Scherzo for Cello and Orchestra was orchestrated so it is altogether appropriate to include it on the Goyana CD conducted by Lawrence Foster with the Barcelona Symphony, Vincent Ellegiers, cello soloist, for Koch International Classics as a bittersweet aperitif. Patrick Russ has adapted the music from Waxman’s score.
