Program Notes

The Furies (Paramount, 1950) is a perfect example of groping for greater depth on the part of Hollywood. A cattle baron (Walter Huston), against the wishes of his possessive daughter (Barbara Stanwyck), remarries unwisely (Judith Anderson) and jeopardizes his empire. The film is permeated with psychoanalytic overtones and elements of classic tragedy. Anthony Mann directed a picture more Film Noir than Western.

Composed in the same year as his Academy Award winning score for Sunset Boulevard by Franz Waxman (1906-1967), whose 144 film scores included The Bride of Frankenstein, Rebecca, A Place in the Sun and The Nun’s Story.

The Furies Suite is composed of The Prelude, Juan & Vance, The Mark of the Furies, The Romance Revived and The King of the Furies.
