Program Notes
It is altogether appropriate that an Australian orchestra record a suite from a film that chronicled the first settlement of Australia by pioneers – prisoners – from England. The John Farrow production of Botany Bay (Paramount 1953) stars Alan Ladd, James Mason, Patricia Medina and Sir Cedric Hardwicke.
This was one of Waxman’s last films at the studio where he won his two Academy Awards for Sunset Boulevard (190) and A Place in the Su (1951). For the next half century he was the only composer to win the Oscar for best original score for two consecutive years.
